چکیده

Masses, temperatures, and absolute luminosities are proposed for a large sample of RRc stars in the globular cluster w Centauri. Our technique uses three observed quantities: period, relative luminosity, and Fourier phase CP31' interpreting them in the light of linear and hydrodynamic pulsation models. The masses we obtain agree with those of the RRd stars in other clusters, and our derived parameters pass a number of tests which are independent of the derivation: (1) we reproduce the observed slope, oCP3do log P, of the CP3rperiod diagram; (2) the values we obtain for M, T., and L locate the w Cen RRc stars in the first overtone instability strip, just where they belong; (3) our derived parameters are shown to be consistent with the fact that w Cen contains no RRd stars. However, our results not only disagree with current horizontal branch models, but also imply that the canonical slope of the log T. versus B V relation (obtained from static model atmospheres) is too steep by a factor of 2, at least as applied to the RRc stars. Some additional results are presented which bear on the confrontation between evolution and pulsation theory: (1) it is shown that the disagreement between the RRd masses and those based on horizontal branch calculations cannot be reconciled by reasonable changes in metallicity or opacity; (2) we find essentially no correlation between the masses of the w Cen RRc stars and their metallicities, and we demonstrate that this circumstance cannot be due to late redward evolution by the RR Lyrae stars of lower mass; and (3) the mass-luminosity relation obtained by our method for three RRc field stars is shown to be consistent with the results of a Baade-Wesselink analysis, but not with horizontal branch models. Finally, we briefly discuss the question of globular cluster ages and calculate an age for w Centauri based upon its RRc stars. Kinematics of Tidal Debris from Omega Centauri’s Progenitor Galaxy

We present the kinematic properties of a tidally disrupted dwarf galaxy in the Milky Way, based on the hypothesis that its central part once contained the most massive Galactic globular cluster, ω Cen. Dynamical evolution of a selfgravitating progenitor galaxy that follows the present-day and likely past orbits of ω Cen is calculated numerically and the kinematic nature of their tidal debris is...

Deep Fors1 Observations of the Double Main Sequence of Ω Centauri

We present the results of a deep photometric survey performed with FORS1@VLT aimed at investigating the complex Main Sequence structure of the stellar system ω Centauri. We confirm the presence of a double Main Sequence and identify its blue component (bMS) over a large field of view up to 26’ from the cluster center. We found that bMS stars are significantly more concentrated toward the cluste...

New Limits on an Intermediate Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri: Ii. Dynamical Models

We present a detailed dynamical analysis of the projected density and kinematical data available for the globular cluster ω Centauri. We solve the spherical anisotropic Jeans equation for a given density profile to predict the projected profiles of the RMS velocity σ̄(R), in each of the three orthogonal coordinate directions (line of sight, proper motion radial, and proper motion tangential). Th...

The Unique History of the Globular Cluster Ω Centauri

Using current observational data and simple dynamical modeling, we demonstrate that ω Cen is not special among the Galactic globular clusters in its ability to produce and retain the heavy elements dispersed in the AGB phase of stellar evolution. The multiple stellar populations observed in ω Cen cannot be explained if it had formed as an isolated star cluster. The formation within a progenitor...

New Limits on an Intermediate Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri: I. Hubble Space Telescope Photometry and Proper Motions

We analyze data from the Hubble Space Telescope’s Advanced Camera for Surveys of the globular cluster Omega Cen. We construct a photometric catalog of 1.2×106 stars over a 10′×10′ central field down to below BF435W = 23 (M ∼ 0.35M⊙). The 2.5to 4-year baseline between observations yields a catalog of some 10 proper motions over a smaller area, with 53,382 “high-quality” measurements in a central...
